I'm a student at the University of Michigan, and I want to learn a little more about how queer identities, my own and others, affect design.

How does being queer inform your work?

I think that being queer affects my interests, affects how I see the subjects of my work, and has given me an interest in how masculinity is represented and examined in visual culture.

What are your favorite pieces of queer visual culture?

I'll always have a soft spot for the classic ACT UP/Silence = Death inverted pink triangle, I think that reversing Nazi iconography is both powerful and daring, and that the piece is both recognizable and highly successful.

Which other queer people inspire you?

I follow a lot of queer artists on social media, but I think in general I've been inspired by queer people who faced deep oppression without giving up, be that as activists, professionals, or designers. Alan Turing, Magnus Hirschfeld, Martha P. Johnson, folks like that.
