Executive Creative Director, author, designer and strategist with an MDes focused on design research and creative industry ethics.

How does being queer inform your work?

My intersecting marginalizes identities including my queerness inform my focus on ethical work. The discrimination I’ve encounter in the design and advertising industries have inspired me to educate, write, and design with inclusivity, accessibility, and holistic sustainability as my guide. I recently wrote a book on the topic called Ethical Sellout: A Designer’s Guide to Giving a F/ck. My queer female identity has meant experiencing a lot of discrimination over the course of my career. It has made me particularly sensitive to the importance of safe, inclusive spaces and has informed my focus on ethical design practice.

What are your favorite pieces of queer visual culture?

I can’t get enough of Basquiat or Haring art. I also love the work Wednesday (@hellomynameiswednesday) does at the intersections of queer/trans identities and mental health.

Which other queer people inspire you?

Roxane Gay and Hannah Gadsby are both highly inspirational. Their otherworldly talent, strength, radical vulnerability, and raging queerness make them queer demigods (even for a nonbeliever like me). I'm in love with the work of Adam J. Kurtz and interested to learn about more homos doing great work.
