How does being queer inform your work?

As a proudly black and queer designer, my identity fuels some of the creativity and empathy in my work. It helps me champion diversity, ensuring that every brand I create speaks authentically and inclusively. My own experiences in the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities have emphasized the power of visibility and representation. This empowers me to create designs that resonate with all audiences, including those often left in the sidelines.Plus, who knows better than us about shaking things up and challenging norms? This perspective helps me push boundaries in design, making every brand I work with uniquely distinctive and innovative. In a nutshell, being queer adds that special dash of empathy, inclusivity, and boldness to my work. It guides me in shaping brands that truly mirror their values and identities while looking irresistibly good!

What are your favorite pieces of queer visual culture?

As an animation enthusiast and a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, my favorite piece of queer visual culture has to be "Steven Universe". This show is more than just a series to me; it's a revolutionary portrayal of queer identities and relationships in a medium that's accessible to all ages. The creator, Rebecca Sugar, being a non-binary bisexual person herself, has elegantly woven themes of queer love, identity, and acceptance into the narrative. What I love most about "Steven Universe" is how it embraces the fluidity of gender and sexuality, offering representation that's all too rare in mainstream animation.Throughout the years, I've been lucky to see even more representation, and I've developed a deep appreciation for shows like "Tuca and Bertie", "The Owl House", and "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power". These series further push the boundaries of LGBTQ+ representation in animation, showcasing diverse characters and relationships that resonate with my own experiences. They not only entertain but also create crucial visibility for the queer community, making them a cherished part of my queer visual culture favorites.

Which other queer people inspire you?

Lil Nas X is a source of inspiration for me, both as a queer individual and a creative professional. He broke onto the scene with "Old Town Road," proving that genre boundaries could be blurred and challenged. But, it's his fearless and authentic representation of his queer identity that truly resonates with me.Lil Nas X's music and videos often feature visuals and plots that proudly celebrate queer culture and experiences. His 'coming out' and the subsequent embrace of his identity, especially as a black man in the often conservative world of hip-hop, has been nice to witness. His visuals, challenge societal norms and expectations, making room for broader, more inclusive narratives in the mainstream media. Lil Nas X's authenticity inspires me to continuously infuse my work with my own experiences and perspectives as a black and queer person.
