How does being queer inform your work?

My digital art pieces often feature themes and subjects that explore identity, love, relationships, and the invisible barriers that the exist between them. I use my work to increase visibility and representation for the queer community. Perhaps even more important, the creation process is an outlet for me to process emotions, traumas, and challenges related to my sexual orientation.

What are your favorite pieces of queer visual culture?

A painting called "The Revolution" by out, gay Mexican painter Fabián Cháirez. The piece features an effeminate Emiliano Zapata, a revolutionary hero, posed naked in high heels barebacked on a horse with an erection. The piece caused calamity as demonstrations broke out by anti-LGBTQ protestors at the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City. The museum eventually caved to the demands of the protestors, but not before recieving world-wide coverage and raising many important questions about gender norms.

Which other queer people inspire you?

Out, gay artist Julian Callos in California creates beautiful, mysterious, and stunning visual art pieces using gauche. Much of his early work resonates with the feelings of fear of the unknown and isolation experienced by we who must declare ourselves different to test the barriers of love and acceptance. Callos's work has been featured as product design for Chipotle, used in book cover illustrations, and continues to be exhibited in California.
