I’m a queer femme (junior) designer living in San Francisco and currently working as a designer for an advertising agency.

How does being queer inform your work?

It makes me challenge what is “appropriate” and what binaries are ingrained in design. Color coding for genders, visuals that lean to ‘male’ or ‘female’, who we’re targeting. I think there’s an opportunity for something so much greater than that.

What are your favorite pieces of queer visual culture?

The Zine community. Much of it has to do with both design and queerness, provoking with visuals through a theme. Queer people are intrinsically rule breakers, and they often break the rules the most in art and design as well.

Which other queer people inspire you?

I learn a lot through books and poetry as other art forms, so I lean on a lot of queer authors/writers to take in more queer voices—Alexander Chee, Ocean Vuong, Fran Tirado.
