How does being queer inform your work?

Being queer often means being the only one on the team. This is especially true when working in tech. I usually don't get asked about my life outside of work, probably because my colleagues can't relate or don't want to say the wrong thing. It can be a little lonely in terms of just common culture and understanding that can exist with other queer folks.

What are your favorite pieces of queer visual culture?

Fanzines and ephemera from the 1980s and 1990s, such as Act Up and Riot Grrrl-related materials, bands, etc. I'm also really into art like Claude Cahun, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, David Wojnarowicz, Nan Goldin, Catherine Opie, Alok Vaid-Menon.

Which other queer people inspire you?

Whenever I encounter a queer person in product/UX design, I'm already inspired because it happens so infrequently. I get inspiration from many places like reading, podcasts and listening to David Bowie and going to art museums. I also get inspiration from the community of friends I've cultivated over the years. And my activist friends who want to get offline and commit to cultivating in-person connections.
