How does being queer inform your work?

I've been revolting against the gender binary since I was 5 years old, which came with a lot of threats and warnings about "straightening out" as a young person. The pressure cooker of that led to me coming out to a hostile family and community at 16, and being kicked out and on my own. Being queer fortified by deep commitment to be unabashedly myself, and to be bravely stubborn. These are qualities that I try to show up with along my creative journey, as I continue learning different mediums to speak my truths.

What are your favorite pieces of queer visual culture?

Mickalene Thomas' Le déjeuner sur l’herbe: Les Trois Femmes Noires

Which other queer people inspire you?

Chavela Vargas, Le Tigre, Rebecca Sugar, the Guerilla Girls (although anonymous... I believe in all my heart there are queer folks among them), Octavia Butler, Alison Bechdel, Claude Cahun, Jeanette Winterson, Pedro Almodóvar, Lena Waith, Judith Halberstam
